Still coming together for Puerto Rico
Often you donate an item or give cash without ever knowing what happens next. That’s not the case for us.
Last October, employees across our US sites came together for Puerto Rico. It was an opportunity to collectively show our support for our colleagues in Puerto Rico as well as for communities and patients across the island. Together, we did more than show support – we showed up!
Led by our Conexion Latina ERG, we collected 80 pallets of donated goods loaded into 5 containers – all shipped to our Manufacturing site in Humacao facility in Puerto Rico. In addition to in-kind donations, we raised nearly $55k in total to support Save the Children US disaster relief.
Fast forward to the new year and thanks to the relentless efforts of our teams in Puerto Rico (in Humacao and Guaynabo), the Conexion Latina ERG, the nonprofit organization “Fundacion Causa en Accion”, National Guard and the local community leaders – the 80 pallets of donated goods have now been delivered!
First, they started by donating all the animal food for cats and dogs to a nonprofit organization called “Santuario Mi Pequeño Albergue”. The history of this organization started nine years ago with a small group of volunteers and their infinite love to animals. They are dedicated to rescue and bring food to animals on the streets.
The second donation was made to “Cineret,” which is a ministry dedicated to feeding and providing shelter to homeless people. While there, they offered canned food, water, personal hygiene products, paper towels, toilette paper and cleaning supplies.
They finished the deliveries by distributing the rest of the donations to eight communities (Mariana, Pasto Viejo, Vista Hermosa, Mabu, Buzo, Anton Ruiz, Las Asturianas, Tejas) in need.
The team left inspired by the communities across Puerto Rico, fulfilled by their gratitude, and reenergized by the fact that there is still more work to do. We remain committed to help – one employee, one community at a time.
As a company, we have provided $1 million in cash donations to partners like Save the Children, the American Red Cross, Direct Relief and Americares to address needs in Puerto Rico and other US communities after the disastrous 2017 hurricane season.
And, together with employees like Isamar, Terry, Molly, and Adriana (see Women on a Mission in Puerto Rico) and in partnership with our Employee Resource Groups, the Multi-Faith Employee Network and Conexion Latina, and with the leadership of our GSK offices in Humacao and Guaynabo, we remain focused on continuing to find ways to help our Puerto Rican colleagues and communities fully recover.
